Foster Hill Road Cemetery Event Details

The Friends of Foster Hill Road Cemetery host a number of themed talks during the year, which are open to the public and always prove very popular.  The Cemetery records are available at the Chapel during the Heritage Weekend in September and an annual carol concert is held near Christmas.  Other events are held to mark special occasions.

Members of the Friends lead several guided walks during the summer months. Each walk is themed and covers topics such as the Cemetery’s spectacular graves, its history, its wildlife, tales of those buried there and more.  Walks are also included during the Heritage weekend.  The walks last approximately 1.5 hours and the pace is gentle.  However, the cemetery grounds are uneven so a pair of stout walking shoes is recommended.

We are also happy to arrange bespoke walks for interested groups, please contact us for details.

The times and dates of our events vary, so please see our events calendar for more details.

Keeping Faith at the Front during WW1

Helen Frost returns with a fascinating, thought-provoking, inspiring, funny and yet incredibly moving illustrated talk.
Some people had a faith and some did not – so how did the men and women who served in the Great War cope with the constant mental and physical strain that years of war perpetuated?
This illustrated talk focuses on two particular aspects:

Firstly, the extraordinary and unusual true stories and accounts of the unarmed chaplains and how they not only took and delivered ministry and faith to the soldiers and nurses at the front lines during the Great War but also how many went far beyond their calling to deliver kindness, reassurance and care during their service. Many were awarded medals for their bravery.

Secondly, there are also true stories and first-hand accounts told by the people that served their country and kept faith, (in a non-religious sense) who trusted in each other during these terrible years of war. Stories of simple, heart-warming acts of kindness given during times of immense stress. Acts that eased the suffering and nerves shattered by the horrors of war.

Helen will be bringing a display of laminated photographs and facsimile documents to accompany her talk,

Refreshments will be available after the talk.  These are free, but a small contribution to the Friends is always welcome.

This talk is free to Friends of the Cemetery.
