SUMMARY:Summer Walk - The Scottish Soldiers
DESCRIPTION:Bedford-born Richard Galley is a local historian (and bagpiper!) who has spent many years researching the story of the Scottish Highland Division’s friendly occupation of Bedford in the first nine months of World War One. \nIn this walk\, Richard will lead you through the inspirational story of Bedford’s response to the influx of 17\,000 Highland Division soldiers over one weekend in August 1914\, paying close attention to the Highlander’s graves located in the cemetery\, most (but not all) due to the impact of disease on the Scots during the winter of 1914/15. \nAfter the walk Richard will be available to chat to you over a cup of tea in the chapel. \nMeet at the Chapel 10 mins before the start of the walk. \nThis event is free but a small contribution to the Friends would be welcome. \n(Please note: The cemetery ground is uneven so please wear appropriate shoes.\nWhen viewing memorials\, please do not lean on them.) \n  \nImage courtesy of Richard Galley

SUMMARY:Two Summer Walks - Notable Women and A Woman's Work?
DESCRIPTION:As part of National Cemeteries Week we will be holding two separate but similarly-themed walks.  Cemetery guides Adrian and Anni highlight some women of Bedford that you might not have heard of\, but who certainly made their mark. \nNotable Women – led by Anni\nFor many of our guided walks\, the spotlight has tended to fall on the men buried in the cemetery — not because they were more interesting\, but because Victorian society placed them at the forefront of public life and record-keeping. Yet the cemetery is also the resting place of women whose stories are just as compelling\, influential\, and at times surprising.\nOn this special walk\, we turn our attention to some of these remarkable women: pioneers\, philanthropists\, artists\, campaigners\, as well as women whose lives were rooted in family and community but nonetheless achieved extraordinary things. Through their memorials and histories\, we will explore how they shaped their families\, their neighbourhoods\, and in some cases the wider world.\nJoin us to discover the quieter — but no less powerful — legacies of the women of the cemetery\, and to see familiar ground from a fresh perspective. \nA Woman’s Work? – led by Adrian\nIn her song Que Sera\, Sera\, Doris Day concluded that a girl should accept that Fate would determine her future life\, and would have far fewer opportunities than men to make a name for themselves in the Professions\, the Arts or Politics. Historically that has unfairly been the case\, yet in contradiction to to this unambitious attitude\, our cemetery has women who did remarkable things\, started significant cultural movements or deserve our admiration for their courage.\nTheir stories are uplifting\, sad and memorable in equal measures. Join us and find out why we say Hats Off! to Danuta\, Pearl\, Elizabeth and other inspirational women. \nRefreshments will be available after the walks. \nMeet at the Chapel 10 minutes before the walks. \nThis walks are free but donations to the Friends are always welcome \nPlease note:  The cemetery ground is uneven\, so please wear sensible shoes.  When viewing memorials\, please do not lean on them. \n

SUMMARY:Summer Walk - Sally Red Shoes
DESCRIPTION:Ruth Hogan is one of Bedford’s best-selling  authors and her book\, ‘The Wisdom of Sally Red Shoes’\,  includes many scenes set in our cemetery where one character walks her dog and imagines what the lives of some people buried here were like. \nIn this walk\, Ruth will point out some of the graves that inspired her\, detail the lives she made up about those people and will read short extracts from the book. In tandem with this\, Cemetery Guide Adrian Bean will give the true\, and in one case\, surprising background details of these real people as opposed to the imagined lives. The imagined stories hint at other little-known facts about the cemetery and the nature of the memorials’ hidden messages. \nAfter the walk Ruth will spend plenty of time in chatting with you and signing books while having “the lovely cup of tea” in the chapel. \nMeet at the Chapel 10 minutes before the walk. \nNo need to book\, just turn up. \nThis walk is free but donations to the Friends are always welcome \nPlease note:  The cemetery ground is uneven\, so please wear sensible shoes.  When viewing memorials\, please do not lean on them.

SUMMARY:Eddie Chapman-The Life and Crimes of Double Agent Zigzag
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, Paul Barwick gave us one of our most interesting talks\, on “The Body in the Bag\,” and we welcome him once again for  a fascinating insight to the life of a double agent.\n\nEddie Chapman hated authority as far back as he could remember. Authority detested him back and from an early age he was always in trouble with the law.\n\nOn the run from Scotland Yard\, he was imprisoned for a burglary in Jersey just before the German forces invaded in June 1940. Rather than spend the whole war in prison he offered the Third Reich his services as a German secret agent.\n\nHighly trained in spy-craft and sabotage\, he was sent back to Britain on a deadly mission to derail British aircraft manufacturing. However\, Eddie had other ideas\, turning himself in to MI5 and becoming a double agent for the Allies\, working to help defeat the Nazi’s. The only British service personnel ever to receive an Iron Cross\, his true story is an amazing episode in British espionage history.\n\nRefreshments will be available after the talk.  These are free\, but a small contribution to the Friends is always welcome.\n\nThis talk is free to Friends of the Cemetery.

SUMMARY:Churchyards\, Cemeteries and the Victorians  -  Black Feathers to Black Underwear
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Varty is a regular and very popular speaker and this talk will definitely not fail to amuse and enlighten.\n\n\nThe Victorians had an obsession with death which is difficult for us to understand. This illustrated talk shows how overcrowded churchyards led to changes in the Burial Acts\, the subsequent growth of private cemeteries and how Victoria’s own private grief influenced the whole nation. The talk covers all aspects of mourning\, funerals and even explains the correct use of “Dr Winn’s Black and Blue Reviver”.\n\nThere will be examples of Victorian jewellery on display as well as some more unusual mourning items\, mostly black!\n\n\nRefreshments will be available after the talk.  These are free\, but a small contribution to the Friends is always welcome.\n\nThis talk is free to Friends of the Cemetery.

SUMMARY:The Fight for Suffrage
DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, women were denied their democratic right to vote. In 1918\, thanks to the Representation of the People’s Act\, eight million women could go to polling stations for the first time. However\, this act stipulated that only women over the age of 30 who met certain property qualifications could vote. It would take a further ten years of campaigning before British women were given the vote on the same basis as men. \nDressed as a suffragette\, Eve Bacon tells the story\, not only of the suffragettes\, but of the wider campaign for universal suffrage. \nRefreshments will be available after the talk.  These are free\, but a small contribution to the Friends is always welcome.\n\nThis talk is free to Friends of the Cemetery. \n\n

SUMMARY:Keeping Faith at the Front during WW1
DESCRIPTION:Helen Frost returns with a fascinating\, thought-provoking\, inspiring\, funny and yet incredibly moving illustrated talk.\n\nSome people had a faith and some did not – so how did the men and women who served in the Great War cope with the constant mental and physical strain that years of war perpetuated?\n\nThis illustrated talk focuses on two particular aspects:\n\nFirstly\, the extraordinary and unusual true stories and accounts of the unarmed chaplains and how they not only took and delivered ministry and faith to the soldiers and nurses at the front lines during the Great War but also how many went far beyond their calling to deliver kindness\, reassurance and care during their service. Many were awarded medals for their bravery. \nSecondly\, there are also true stories and first-hand accounts told by the people that served their country and kept faith\, (in a non-religious sense) who trusted in each other during these terrible years of war. Stories of simple\, heart-warming acts of kindness given during times of immense stress. Acts that eased the suffering and nerves shattered by the horrors of war. \nHelen will be bringing a display of laminated photographs and facsimile documents to accompany her talk\, \nRefreshments will be available after the talk.  These are free\, but a small contribution to the Friends is always welcome.\n\nThis talk is free to Friends of the Cemetery. \n\n

SUMMARY:The First Enigma Code Breakers
DESCRIPTION:Following his excellent talk last year on the history of the Government Code and Cypher School and Bletchley Park as its WWII war station\, Mike Barbakoff returns with a remarkable story of the first Enigma Codebreakers.\n\nMost people associate Bletchley Park with the original breaking of the German Enigma enciphered messages in WWII. In fact\, the first to break Enigma was the Polish Cipher Bureau in 1932.\n\nThe Poles were the first to recognise that with machine created ciphers\, you need mathematicians. In 1931 they hired three brilliant young men from Poznan university. One of them\, Marian Rejewski\, broke Enigma in 1932 using the mathematics of probability. “The First Enigma Codebreakers” tells their remarkable story from 1931 to VE Day.\nRefreshments will be available after the talk.  These are free\, but a small contribution to the Friends is always welcome.\n\nThis talk is free to Friends of the Cemetery.

SUMMARY:Sounds Familiar
DESCRIPTION:Television in the 1960s\, 70s and 80s  was very different from now.  Britain only had two channels in 1960\, BBC and ITV.  Television in Britain was in black and white until 1967 and it certainly wasn’t broadcast for 24 hours. \nIf you remember programmes such as The Sweeney\, Happy Days\, Byker Grove and the Old Grey Whistle Test why not join Kevin Varty for a nostalgic look at the TV programmes during this time. \nWarning – audience participation will be required in identifying theme tunes. \nRefreshments will be available after the talk.  Although these are free\, a small contribution to the Friends is always welcome. \nThe talk is free to Friends.
