SUMMARY:Sounds Familiar
DESCRIPTION:Television in the 1960s\, 70s and 80s  was very different from now.  Britain only had two channels in 1960\, BBC and ITV.  Television in Britain was in black and white until 1967 and it certainly wasn’t broadcast for 24 hours. \nIf you remember programmes such as The Sweeney\, Happy Days\, Byker Grove and the Old Grey Whistle Test why not join Kevin Varty for a nostalgic look at the TV programmes during this time. \nWarning – audience participation will be required in identifying theme tunes. \nRefreshments will be available after the talk.  Although these are free\, a small contribution to the Friends is always welcome. \nThe talk is free to Friends.

SUMMARY:Put That Light Out!
DESCRIPTION:In December 1937\, the British government passed the Air Raid Precautions (or ‘ARP’) Act\, requiring local authorities to ready themselves in case of air attack. \nOne of the most visible forms of ‘ARP’ was the air raid warden. These wardens became the first link in a chain of ARP bodies that would include ambulance drivers\, rescue parties and liaison with police and fire brigades. \nJoin Jean Fullerton to learn all about the unsung heroes of Britain’s WW2 Civil Defence.  It wasn’t just Dad’s Army\, but everyday heroes who did their duty during the dark days of WW2. \nJean will have books to sell on the day. \nRefreshments will be served after the talk.  These are free but a small contribution to the Friends is always welcome. \nThe talk is free to members of the Friends.

SUMMARY:The Women's Land Army during the First World War
DESCRIPTION:Officially formed in February 1917\, the women who  joined the Women’s Land Army during the First World War enabled vital food production to continue on the Home Front. Their efforts attempted to fill the enormous void left by men who had gone to serve overseas; men who had previously worked in farming and agriculture. \nFrom its infancy\, pre-1917 through to its peak and subsequent demobilisation\, this illustrated talk  by Helen Frost will give an insight into the quirky and unusual world of the Great War Land Girl. Come along to discover exactly how they interacted\, lived together\, socialised\, relaxed\, fell in love\, went off the rails and got through difficult times. \nHelen will be bringing copies of her recently published book to sell along with a reproduction ‘Landswoman’ uniform and other illustrative material. \nRefreshments will be available after the talk.  These are free\, but a small contribution to the Friends is always welcome. \nThis talk is free to Friends of the Cemetery. \n(Image by kind permission of Mrs Hilary Thomas)

SUMMARY:The Body in the Bag
DESCRIPTION:You might remember the strange case of Gareth Williams\, an MI6 agent who in 2010\, was found dead in a locked suitcase and with the keys inside. Suicide? Murder? Assassination by foreign agents? The case remained a total enigma. \nLast year\, Paul Barwick gave us one of our most interesting talks\, on “The White Mouse\,” and this talk promises to be just as fascinating\, as he offers various possible solutions…but there will be probably just as many questions as answers. \nRefreshments will be available after the talk.  These are free\, but a small contribution to the Friends is always welcome. \nThis talk is free to Friends of the Cemetery.

SUMMARY:Summer Walks - The Wisdom of Sally Red Shoes
DESCRIPTION:Ruth Hogan is one of Bedford’s best-selling  authors and her book\, ‘The Wisdom of Sally Red Shoes’\,  includes many scenes set in our cemetery where one character walks her dog and imagines what the lives of some people buried here were like. \nIn this walk\, Ruth will point out some of the graves that inspired her\, detail the lives she made up about those people and will read short extracts from the book. In tandem with this\, Cemetery Guide Adrian Bean will give the true\, and in one case\, surprising background details of these real people as opposed to the imagined lives. The imagined stories hint at other little-known facts about the cemetery and the nature of the memorials’ hidden messages. \nAfter the walk Ruth will spend plenty of time in chatting with you and signing books while having “the lovely cup of tea” in the chapel. \nMeet at the Chapel 10 minutes before the walk. \nPlease note:  The cemetery ground is uneven\, so wear sensible shoes.  When viewing memorials\, please do not lean on them.

SUMMARY:Bedford Highlanders - The Scottish Occupation of Bedford 1914-15
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of one weekend in mid-August 1914\, around 17\,000 Scottish territorial soldiers arrived in Bedford where they would spend the next 9 months getting ready to join the fighting on the Western Front. These were men of the Highland Division (later to become the 51st Highland Division). \nThe kilted troops became a familiar and welcome sight in the town and surrounding countryside and largely as a consequence of the dispersal of billets throughout the Borough\, Bedfordians took the Highlanders to their hearts. Strong\, genuine and lasting bonds were quickly forged between the Bedfordians and the Scots and several Bedford families can trace their connections back to Highland Division men who returned to the Town and made it their home after the war ended. \nThe story of the Highlanders’ time in Bedford is overshadowed by the degree to which disease affected the Division during the winter of 1914/15 and Foster Hill Road cemetery is the final resting place of 33 Highland Division men who succumbed at that time. \nNative Bedfordian Richard Galley has spent many years researching the story of the Highland Division’s time in the Town and his fascinating and engaging talk\, supported by a wealth of contemporary photographs\, examines the impact of the Scots’ friendly invasion of Bedfordshire during the early months of the First World War. \nRefreshments will be available after the talk. \nThis event is free to Friends of the Cemetery.

SUMMARY:Heritage Open Days - Guided Tree Walk

We often see a dog that we say is “clever\,” but so are trees\, as she will illustrate. \nJo currently holds the record for the highest number of visitors on one of our cemetery walks\, but if it’s a sunny day\, perhaps you’ll help get the figure up to 70! \nMeet at the Chapel 10 mins before the start of the walk. \nThis event is free but a small contribution to the Friends would be welcome. \nThere will be refreshments available at the end of the walks. \n(Please note: The cemetery ground is uneven so please wear appropriate shoes.\nWhen viewing memorials\, please do not lean on them.)
